Key Insights
Gamaliel, Paul’s former teacher, did not see Jesus as the Messiah, but his counsel to the Sanhedrin was certainly influenced by divine providence.
The Persecution
- The Apostles were arrested, put in jail, beaten, and slandered by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Acts 5:17-19.
- The Angel of the Lord led them into “serious trouble”. Acts 5:19-24
- The Apostles chose to obey God and not obey men. Acts 5:29
Emergence of the “Ally”
Gamaliel was an influential Pharisee and a teacher of the Law who was highly respected by many. Acts 22:3 indicates that he was Teacher of Apostle Paul. Gamaliel lived by his name.
- Demonstrated Courage by going against the more popular perspectives to resist the Apostles and to kill them – Act 5:33-34
- Demonstrated high knowledge and applied legal skills by citing authorities to support his claim.- Acts 5:36-37.
- Demonstrated reverence for God by doing the right thing. – Act 5:38-39
- Demonstrated high wisdom – Acts 5:39
- The Council was persuaded by the words of Gamaliel and they didn’t kill the Apostles. Though, they were flogged mercilessly.
These are the types of leaders we need in Africa and the world today. Leaders of Courage who have knowledge of the mind and purpose of God and will stand for it.
